WELCOME TO JAMES (JIM) MOBBERLEY’S WEBSITE

I am a composer of contemporary concert music, including orchestra, chamber music, electroacoustic music and music for film, video, the stage, and dance. This site includes my professional bio and related information, the first five or six pages of the scores to most of my music, and links to recordings of many of these works.

I am now retired from 37 years of teaching music composition, and am Curators’ Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the Conservatory at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, one of the largest and most prestigious music composition programs in the U.S. You’ll find me on the left, with my five fellow UMKC faculty composers. There has been little written about the nature of composition teaching, but I’ve developed a course in composition pedagogy here at UMKC in collaboration with Christopher Biggs (former student, now teaching at Western Michigan University) and also incorporate aspects of the class and many of the class materials into our UMKC Summer Composition Workshop. You’ll find the course materials and other information about composition curricula, and the teaching methods I used at UMKC.

Finally, I am a rather avid cyclist, and have done one cross country solo tour, numerous week-long tours in the U.S., and thousands of one-day rides in Italy, the U.K., and all over America, including charity fundraisers. This shot was taken in the hills above the Civitella Ranieri Center in Umbria, Italy, during a 6-week artist residency.
